Geometricus reaches new heights with RIEGL ULS systems

Geometricus d.o.o., a Croatian surveying company, began working with RIEGL® UAV LiDAR sensors in November 2022. Just one year later, following the success with miniVUX-SYS, Geometricus is ready to integrate the more advanced RIEGL VUX®-16023 UAV LiDAR sensor into its workflow and service portfolio.

Geometricus has always taken a proactive approach to technological advancements and recognized the potential of UAVs in geodetic surveys early on. After facing challenges with their first non-RIEGL system, they sought a solution that would meet geodetic-quality standards, be exceptionally fast, practical, and versatile for daily use. With these goals in mind, they chose the RIEGL miniVUX®-3UAV.

In November 2022, Geometricus – with financial support from the Norwegian Financial Mechanism (Norway Grants) through the HydroGraphBoost project and the accompanying SpatialSuperVision project – acquired its miniVUX-SYS featuring the RIEGL miniVUX-3UAV fully integrated into a DJI M300 multirotor (sensor equipment – airborne LiDAR system and specialized point cloud processing software). This system marked a true turning point for the company and is used almost daily, reliably providing data that fully meets the needs of Geometricus and its clients.

Building on this successful experience and growing market demand, the company decided to further expand its service portfolio. The need for shorter data acquisition times with multispectral cameras combined with even more precise scanning data led to an investment in the RIEGL VUX-SYS UAV system with the RIEGL VUX-16023 NFB (Nadir-Forward-Backward) scanner, fully integrated.

This specialized system configuration also allows deployment on helicopter platforms, offering an additional advantage for Geometricus and its projects. The company’s next goal is to expand its portfolio further and conduct geodetic missions using helicopters, covering even larger areas and projects.

Stjepan Keleminec, CEO of Geometricus, emphasizes:
“We are thrilled that Innovation Norway, the operator of the Norway Grants fund in Croatia, recognized the potential of our projects and the benefits they bring to our company. Thanks to their support, we were able to achieve our goals so quickly.”

In October 2023, Geometricus received the new VUX-SYS with the RIEGL VUX-16023. The system will be used on the new Acecore Noa drone, also delivered to them in Horn by Acecore. During their stay in Horn, training was provided on both the drone and the LiDAR system.

“The training organized by RIEGL greatly contributed to our rapid understanding of LiDAR data acquisition and processing capabilities,” stated Matej Petrinović, surveyor at Geometricus. “We are looking forward to our first mission!” He added, “In the meantime, the system has successfully completed its first geodetic flights in Croatia.”

Michael Mayer, director of RiCOPTER UAV GmbH, proudly notes:
“The fact that Geometricus moved from the miniVUX-SYS to the top-tier VUX-16023 system in just one year is a testament to the company’s excellent work! As a LiDAR system provider, we are thrilled to see such progress from our client – this is a great success story, and we are proud to have innovative and motivated companies like Geometricus in the RIEGL family.”

The continuous growth and development of Geometricus is just the beginning, and with the delivery of the VUX-16023, a very positive and successful path lies ahead.

“Our next goal is to strengthen the company’s hydrographic capabilities and apply them in technical activities in the market,” adds Keleminec. “We look forward to what RIEGL can offer us in this segment.”

We are confident that this is just the beginning of our shared journey and look forward to the future…
